Stay Focused

Ships Running Aground in a Storm. 1690s. Oil on canvas.

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."— Henry Ford

"But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" Matthew 14: 24-31

Peter stepped out of that boat that day by faith, into that raging sea to get to the Lord. As long as his eyes were on his goal, the Lord, he stayed on top of the waters. But as soon as his eyes strayed from his goal he lost his focus and that is when the fear of his obstacles began to drag him under.

We cannot let the pressures of life cause us to lose our focus. When the storms of life bring adversity, troubles, and trials and their waves begin to crash down upon us, that is not the time to take our eyes off of the Lord. If we do, we will begin to sink into despair, hopelessness, misery, desolation, anguish, gloom, depression, and despondency.

We cannot be overcome with fear of the obstacles life brings our way. When troubles and trials come, don't let that be your focus. When the storms of life come crashing down upon you don't let it cloud your mind's eye. We have to stay focused upon the Lord at all times. Matthew 8: 23-27 reads; "And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!"

You see, the Lord is on ship with us at all times. So no matter what the storm, it doesn't matter how high the waves crash, or how many obstacles the devil throws in our path, DON'T BE FEARFUL AND OF LITTLE FAITH. HE WILL ARISE AND REBUKE THE WINDS AND THE SEA. We cannot lose focus and let our obstacles become stumbling blocks that will cause us to fall away from the Lord. But rather we must use those obstacles as stepping stones to climb higher to reach our goal. We have to keep our eyes focused on Jesus and on reaching our goal - HEAVEN. We must learn to call out to Him and He will give us Peace in the midst of our storm.

Love It! We cannot afford to lose FOCUS - He is about ready to say, Come to His church. Jolene, this was beautifully said.

Karen, You're right, He is about to come for His church. When I see all that is going on in this world, that just makes me want to fasten my eyes upon Him even more. We need to be like Elisha was with Elijah. Fasten our eyes on Him (The Lord) and follow Him where ever He leads and don't let Him out of our sight. Say we want a double portion just like Elisha did. (Hmmmm, that'll preach). Stopping here. My thoughts are rolling. :D

At our VBS at my church last night, this was the scripture point for the night. The kids learned that God gives us the power to be brave when we keep our eyes on Him!

Awesome post!

Mervi, We sure could save ourselves a whole lot of heartache if we would just learn to stay focused and not get tangled up in the obstacles around us. But that is what is so awesome about the Lord. When we do get distracted and our eyes stray away from Him and we find ourselves beginning to sink in despair all we have to do is cry out to Him like Peter did. The Lord is faithful. He will be right there to reach out to us and lift us up above it all again.

We do serve such an AWESOME GOD!

Janet, We need to instill this in our children. More than ever before do they need to know that GOD will give them the power they need to be brave and to overcome anything that comes against them.

My grandson learned his Bible verse this past Sunday in Sunday School and he has been going around all week saying it "...Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." James 4:7

I don't know why this particular one has really stuck with him but I am glad it has.

Rochelle, The day I received this quote in my e-mail I needed it. This post was just as much for me as it was for anyone else. Isn't God Good? He always sends us just what we need just when we need it the most.

Sometimes it is a challenge to stay focused, and it seems like during times where I have lost my focus, oftentimes without even realizing it, God will send someone or let me hear something to help me realize where I am at in Him. He is so good!

So True Sis Connell, So True. It's like, Wake up and smell the coffee girl! You are here because you have lost your focus. You have taken your eyes off of Him and focused on your problems instead of the problem solver, JESUS.

Isn't it wonderful though when that unseen hand reaches out to us and lifts us up above it all like He did that day when Peter begin to sink. I am so glad to know that what it says in Hebrews 13:8 is true; "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever."
